Amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the US accused Russia of creating a “false flag” scenario.

“They have a group of agents prepositioned to conduct what we call a ‘false flag operation,'” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

What is a “false flag”?

A “false flag” scenario occurs when a group intentionally misrepresents its affiliation and hides its true identity. It is widely used during war and covert operations.

It is a deceptive step taken by a country or organization to prepare for an attack. Pirate ships often used “false flags” of nations to deceive merchant ships while conducting a “false flag” attack.

Throughout history there are numerous examples of soldiers stealing uniforms from their enemies to take part in covert operations to carry out a secret campaign. The “false flag” tactic is also used to sometimes start a war.

In the latest false flag allegation, the US accused Russia of fabricating an attack on itself or on Russian-speaking Ukrainians by a group of agents to make a false claim about an attack on Ukraine.

False Flag Operations:

The CIA had reportedly conducted a false flag operation against former Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq in 1953 to successfully launch Operation TPAJAX as it conducted bombing campaigns blamed on communist sympathizers. A declassified report claimed Britain’s MI6 and the CIA carried out the operations together.

“Operation Northwoods” is another example of a “false flag” operation proposed by US intelligence in 1962 to justify military action against Cuba.

The US Department of Defense planned to stage “terrorist” attacks against American military and civilian installations and blame Fidel Castro’s regime for them. However, the proposal was rejected by former President Kennedy.
