Contributing to a growing humanitarian crisis, around 10,000 migrants have gathered under a US-Mexico border bridge in the past few days. The bridge connects Del Rio in Texas with Ciudad Acuña in Mexico, and the temporary warehouse there has grown significantly in recent days.

The Haitian migrants who have crossed the Rio Grande sleep under the bridge in appalling conditions.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the number of migrants arrested at the US-Mexico border in July exceeded 200,000 for the first time in 21 years. In addition, the authorities arrested more than 195,000 migrants at the Mexican border just last month, according to the government. This summer’s numbers represent a significant increase from the 51,000 arrested in August 2019.

Most of the migrants are said to be Haitians, with some Cubans, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans also present.

The Washington Post reports that they are part of a larger wave of Haitians heading north, many of whom arrived in Brazil and other South American countries after the 2010 earthquake.

According to the Mayor of Del Rio, Bruno Lozano, there were more than 10,500 migrants under the Del Rio International Bridge as of Thursday evening.

In a statement by the border patrol, it was said that the staff in Del Rio would be increased in order to enable a “safe, humane and orderly process”.

“To avoid injuries from heat-related illnesses, the shaded area under the Del Rio International Bridge serves as a temporary stop while migrants wait to be taken into custody by the US Border Patrol,” she added.
