The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Wednesday that over 200,000 people in the Palestinian Territories are in need of help following the recent Israel-Gaza conflict that resulted in heavy missiles being fired. The organization said there were “grave health needs” in areas severely damaged by the conflict.

“WHO is stepping up its response to provide health assistance to nearly 200,000 people in need in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT),” the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean said in a statement reported by AFP.

“The situation is unstable. WHO remains concerned … and calls for unhindered access to Gaza for humanitarian and developmental essentials and personnel and the referral of patients from Gaza whenever necessary, “warned WHO’s Rik Peeperkorn.

The conflict between Israel and Gaza lasted 11 days and saw heavy rocket fire from Gaza and Israel, the latter causing significant damage and civilian casualties.

The authorities reported that 254 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks, including 66 children and some militants. In Israel, Palestinian attacks killed 12 people, including a child, a teenager and an Israeli soldier.

“Over 77,000 people have been internally displaced and about 30 health facilities have been damaged,” said the WHO.

Since Hamas took control of the area home to two million Palestinians in 2007, Israel has imposed a land and sea blockade on Gaza.
