If Prime Minister Boris Johnson puts a UK government contingency plan into action, hundreds of British soldiers could be drafted to deliver fuel to gas stations across the country. The gas stations are running dry due to shortages and panic buying.

Johnson is expected to team up with senior cabinet members to decide whether to activate Operation Escalin. The meeting was convened after British Petroleum (BP) announced that a third of its gas stations had run out of two major types of fuel. The Association of Petroleum Traders said that 50-90 percent of its members reported that they had run out of fuel.

Operation Escalin was launched years ago to prepare for a no-deal Brexit. If the operation takes place now, hundreds of British soldiers will be drafted to pilot a reserve fleet of 80 tankers. It can take three weeks for the surgery to be fully implemented.

UK ministers reportedly believe that the fuel shortage would have been minimal had it not been for panic buying by the public. But media reports of the crisis have left people standing in long lines to buy fuel.
