A probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) is a systematic and comprehensive approach to assessing complex technological infrastructures in nuclear power plants. The aim of such assessments is to understand and assess the risks and to study the design and operation of components in nuclear power plants. The aim is to guarantee and prove the safety of nuclear power plants.

PSAs were introduced to complement deterministic safety analysis methods and are widely used in the nuclear sector.

However, there are challenges associated with performing PSA on reactors of unique design and / or with limited operational experience, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), research reactors, demonstration reactors, prototype reactors, and reactors of the first type – sometimes referred to as reactors ” singular design “.

The symposium serves as a forum for participants to exchange information about the use and application of PSA for reactors with singular design as well as about the most important differences and challenges in performing analyzes. The event consists of plenary and specialist sessions as well as moderated discussion rounds with the aim of creating a common understanding of the possible advantages and areas of application, challenges and possible solutions in the field of PPE for reactors of unique design.

The following topics will be dealt with during the event:

  • Experience in the implementation of PSA for reactors of unique design (including supporting analyzes).
  • Differences and challenges of PSA for reactors with singular design compared to classical PSA (including supporting analysis).
  • Operating experience from reactors of unique design.
  • Findings and recommendations for the development of PSAs and the use of risk-informed decision-making processes for reactors of unique design.

The symposium aims to attract regulators, designers, operating organizations, technical support and research organizations, and consultants involved in activities related to the PSA of uniquely designed reactors.
