Jan’s ruling LDP elects Fumio Kishida as its new chairman, who becomes the next prime minister


Jan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected ex-foreign minister Fumio Kishida as its new chairman on Wednesday.

Kishida beat his rival Taro Kono in a close race. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga had previously decided to step down.

Jan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected ex-foreign minister Fumio Kishida as its new chairman on Wednesday.

Kishida beat his rival Taro Kono in a close race. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga had previously decided to step down.

Two female candidates, Sanae Takaichi and Seiko Noda, were eliminated from the race. The country is slated to vote this year.

Kishida, 64, is widely known as a consensus builder. The former banker will have to grapple with the country’s economic troubles after suffering the pandemic. Kishida has reportedly proposed a spending package to stimulate the economy.

The new LDP leader had promised a more aggressive policy to fight the virus and proposed mass vaccinations for citizens. Kishida had said the country needed to manufacture oral medicines and the government needed to accelerate efforts to overcome the virus.

“I want us to get closer to and achieve our socio-economic activities close to normal again early next year,” said Kishida.

However, the toughest test for Kishida will likely come in the November elections.
