Kia Seltos vs. Tata Nexon EV – Diesel vs. Electric SUV Drag Race

Kia Seltos vs. Tata Nexon EV – Diesel vs. Electric SUV Drag Race

If you read IAB regularly, you know we just love drag races. Over time we have featured several drag races on our websites, mostly between similar cars and SUVs that run on conventional fuel. This time we have another drag race, but with a twist. It’s an electric car versus a diesel car. To be more precise, it is Tata Nexon EV against the Kia Seltos Diesel, head to head against each other. The Tata Nexon EV is the best-selling electric vehicle in the country, and the Kia Seltos is also one of the best-selling compact SUVs in its class. So this should be a pretty interesting race.

But before we start racing, let’s take a look at the specs. In contrast to other drag races, in which both cars are powered by an internal combustion engine and have comparable equipment, the two SUVs that take part in this drag race are completely different under the skin here. The The Seltos, here in its manual diesel specification, is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine that generates 115 hp and 250 Nm of peak torque. In the meantime it is Tata The Nexon EV is driven by a 3-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, which generates 129 HP and 245 Nm maximum torque and draws the power from a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. There is no transmission with the Nexon EV.

Kia Seltos versus Tata Nexon Ev Drag RaceUnsurprisingly, it was the Nexon EV that, thanks to the inherent strengths of an EV, was the winner of this drag race.

On pro, the Nexon EV has more power than the Seltos, while the latter has a bit more torque. However, there is a world of difference in how both SUVs put that power and torque on the road. The drag race was held over two laps. Unsurprisingly, it was the Tata Nexon EV that emerged victorious on both laps, and that’s primarily because of how an EV produces its power and torque. As you can see in the video, the Kia Seltos has the better start, but the Nexon EV quickly catches up and then zooms past the Seltos to take the win on both laps. What really happened there?

Thanks to the generous torque of the diesel engine, the Seltos comes off the assembly line very well on both laps. In the meantime, the Nexon EV can deliver all 245 Nm of torque directly from a standstill, which overstrains the grip of the tires and of course gives a lot of wheel spin. While the Seltos gets away with it initially, there really is no stopping it once the Nexon EV has gained traction. Not only does it catch up with the Seltos, but it easily overtakes the diesel-powered SUV for a comfortable win. This is the ease with which an EV compares with conventionally fueled vehicles.

However, if this race had lasted longer, the Kia Seltos might have saved some honor. Incidentally, the top speed of the Nexon EV is limited to 120 km / h. In fact, the acceleration of the Nexon EV decreases after 100 km / h. The Kia Seltos, on the other hand, doesn’t have to worry about such problems. In addition, the hard acceleration with an EV inevitably affects the range, and after a few drag races, the range of the Nexon EV had dropped to just 95 km. With limited or no charging infrastructure, this remains one of the biggest challenges for electric vehicle owners in the country that we hope will be resolved in the next few years.
