Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday promised a full investigation by international experts into a metro accident that left at least 23 people dead.

“A thorough investigation is being conducted … to find out the truth,” Lopez Obrador said at his daily press conference.

“This determines the responsibility,” he added.

The left-wing populist said the investigation was in the hands of federal and Mexico City prosecutors.

“We cannot speculate, let alone accuse the possible perpetrators, without having evidence. We will have the investigation carried out soon,” said Lopez Obrador.

The metro line, which partially collided on Monday evening, was built while Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, a close ally of Lopez Obrador, was mayor of the Cital from 2006 to 2012.

Ebrard told the same press conference that it was “a very sad day for everyone” and said he shared the outrage and pain over the tragedy.

“For my part, I made myself fully available to the authorities,” he said.

“I understand that there are many political motivations,” added Ebrard, who is seen as one of the ruling party’s possible candidates for the 2024 presidential election.
