Pope Francis prays for the victims of the worst prison riot in Ecuador

Pope Francis addressed his prayers to the victims of a prison riot in one of the largest prisons in Ecuador, in which 118 inmates were killed.

“I am very saddened by what has happened in the last few days in Guayaquil prison in Ecuador, where a terrible outbreak of violence between inmates of rival gangs has killed more than 100 people and injured many,” Francis told the crowd in St. Peter’s Square for his weekly Angelus prayer.

“May God help us heal the plagues of crime that enslave the poorest and help those who work every day to make prison life more humane,” added the Pope.

Meanwhile, four people were injured and police were shot dead on Saturday in a new clash between prisoners in the Ecuadorian prison that just days earlier killed 118 people in the country’s deadliest prison riot.

Police Commander Tannya Varela said there had been shooting between inmates in Guayaquil prison.

The officers neutralized the confrontation and retained control of the prison, police said.

Two rifles, three pistols, ammunition and cell phones were confiscated in the prison, police said. The prison can hold 5,300 inmates, but it has 8,500, 60 percent more than its capacity.
