Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Italy for the annual G20 summit later this month. The G20 heads of state and government summit will take place in Rome on October 30th and 31st. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s third overseas visit amid the Covid pandemic. He visited Bangladesh in March and the United States in September. Although Prime Minister Modi is unlikely to visit another country during his visit to Italy, New Delhi has not yet made a call.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Italy for the annual G20 summit later this month. The G20 heads of state and government summit will take place in Rome on October 30th and 31st. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s third overseas visit amid the Covid pandemic. He visited Bangladesh in March and the United States in September. Although Prime Minister Modi is unlikely to visit another country during his visit to Italy, New Delhi has not yet made a call.

The summit will see many bilateral negotiations on the sidelines. At the 2019 summit in Osaka in January, bilateral relations between Prime Minister Modi and then US President Donald Trump took place. The G20 was an opportunity to meet the heads of state and government of the JAI (Jan, America, India) and RIC (Russia, India and China). The BRICS executives also met on the fringes of the group’s annual meeting.

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that both Chinese President Xi Jinping and new Janese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida may not attend the G20 summit this year. While no reason is given for Jinping, Jans Kishida will not be attending the summit due to the general election in January. They are supposed to take place on October 31st. This also means that a JAI or RIC meeting will not take place.

The Rome summit will be the 16th G20 summit. Last year, the summit took place virtually because of the Covid crisis. India will host the G20 for the first time in 2023. Preparations for the construction of ultra-modern venues are underway in New Delhi.

The G20 was founded during the global economic crisis in 2008, the first summit took place in November 2008. Since then, the group has also taken on a political role and discussed pressing global issues. Italy, as host, will host a virtual G20 meeting on Afghanistan on October 12th.
