Tigrayan rebels have launched a new offensive in the conflict-torn northern region of Ethiopia and captured a large city, a spokesman for the AFP news agency said on Tuesday.

The allegations come two weeks after the Ethiopian government declared a unilateral ceasefire amid the great strides made by the Tigray Defense Forces.

“Yesterday we launched an offensive in (the southern region of) Raya and we were absolutely able to put the federal defense forces and special forces divisions of Amhara on the run,” said Getachew Reda, spokesman for the Tigrayan rebels.

“We were able to secure most of the southern Tigray including Korem and Alamata (the most important city in the region).”

He said fighting was also taking place in western Tigray.

The allegations could not be independently confirmed and an Ethiopian military spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
