Russia’s capital Moscow reported the highest number of cases when city mayor Sergei Sobyanin admitted “infections are increasing every day”.

The rise in cases comes despite Russia using four home-grown vaccines Sputnik V to be most popular. According to reports, only 18 million Russians have been vaccinated since December last year, which is only 12 percent of the population.

Sputnik V was registered by the authorities in August last year and is said to be the first coronavirus vaccine in the world.

The Russian city of Saint Petersburg, which will host the European Championship from Saturday, also saw an increase in cases, even when the ace WHO warned on Thursday that Europe could see a surge in cases due to various high profile sporting events scheduled in the coming months.

St. Petersburg has registered over 800 COVID-19 cases in the past two weeks, worrying health officials. City authorities have decided to set up makeshift hospitals as cases increase.

Saint Petersburg is due to seven European championship Play next month including the quarter-finals. The city had previously hosted the International Economic Forum, which was attended by thousands.
