South and North Korea have restored their once-suspended hotline and the leaders of the two countries have agreed to restore confidence and improve relations, the president’s Blue House in Seoul said Tuesday.

North Korea’s state-run media agency KCNA also said that all inter-Korean communication channels reopened at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday (0100 GMT) in accordance with an agreement between the heads of state and government.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have exchanged several letters since ril and agreed to reconnect the hotline, the Blue House announced.

North Korea broke off the hotline in June 2020 when cross-border relations became fragile after a failed second summit in February 2019 between Kim and former US President Donald Trump, whom Moon had offered to mediate.

Moon has called for the hotline and talks to be re-established and has placed high hopes on US President Joe Biden to resume negotiations on the dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.
