The gloomy mood in the West has been fueled by a more pragmatic approach by some other powers. Chancellor Angela Merkel described the Taliban’s return to power as “particularly dramatic and terrible”. “It is terrible for the millions of Afghans who have worked for a freer society and, with the support of the Western community, have focused on democracy, education and women’s rights,” she said.
