The tests have been conducted by Labdoor for several years.

In fish oils, rancidity means a strong fishy taste and foul odor. “It was pretty common. For us, they would start to smell and feel uncomfortable,” said Dan Mark, Labdoor’s research director.

An average of 20% of fish oil products exhibit excess oxidation, according to a combination of multiple studies conducted around the world since 2015.

“That means if you buy fish oil, there’s at least a one in five chance that you’re getting an oil that’s more oxidized than recommended levels,” said Dr Effect of Fish Oil.

Flavorings are added to most fish oils to mask rancidity. “Flavorings are added to fish oils to mask fishy smell and taste, and… more oxidized oils could make them more palatable to people, so they could also be used to hide the oil’s oxidation,” added Albert.
